St.
Anselm Church, originally a Mission of St. Raphael’s parish, was established
as a separate parish in 1907. The first Mass was celebrated by Fr. John
Egan, Pastor, in Pioneer Hall, located on Ross Ave. in San Anselmo. On
November 22, 1908, Archbishop Riordan began his dedication address for the
church with “This beautiful edifice will be a great joy and lasting benefit
not only to you who are now present, but to many yet to come within the
parish”.
St.
Anselm Church was named after St. Anselm, Archbishop of Canterbury and
Doctor of the Church. He was born in Italy in 1033 and died in England in
1109. His profound learning and his care for the very poorest of his people
marked him as a leader in thought and action. His feast day is celebrated
April 21st.
